CEE Researchers Received Project X Award from SEAS on Compliant Concrete By Design

May 6, 2025

Assistant Professor Reza Moini and Associate Research Scholar Aimane Najmeddine have been awarded funding from The School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University for their project "Soft Hard Materials By Design: Engineering Compliance in Brittle Concrete" through the Addy Fund for Excellence in Engineering and Project X in 2025. The research will explore how to transform traditionally brittle materials (cementitious, ceramic, polymeric) into compliant (i.e., highly deformable) materials through systematic design of their architectural arrangement, rather than modifying material microstructure, chemistry, or composition. The team will use advanced additive manufacturing and computational design to create concrete structures with controlled compliance while maintaining structural integrity, potentially enabling energy harvesting applications within built infrastructure with occurring structural vibrations.
