Our department welcomes Glaucio Paulino who will join the CEE Faculty and the PRISM Institute as the Sin-I Cheng Professor of Engineering Science on September 1st 2021.  Paulino will be a superb addition to CEE and complement the unique position of Princeton in structural engineering research and education. Paulino is recognized as a world leader in computational mechanics, engineering mechanics and topology optimization. He has developed methodologies that 1) characterize how existing and emerging materials and structures deform and break, 2) optimize the shape and topology of material and structural systems for large-scale multiscale/multiphysics problems, and 3) facilitate the design of deployable origami structures and configurational metamaterials. For this work, he has received many important awards throughout his career, including the 2015 Cozzarelli Prize from the National Academy of Sciences and the 2020 Raymond D. Mindlin Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 2021, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, one of the highest professional honors awarded to an engineer. With his appointment, Princeton’s legacy of excellence in the field of design and analysis of sophisticated structural systems is further guaranteed. We are thrilled to have him join our department and PRISM.
